You earn points, level up, and get constant feedback. The notifications, streaks, and even those <em>emotionally blackmailing<\/em> emails (you know the ones) really do keep you coming back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And honestly, that\u2019s a good thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Duolingo Chinese helped me build a solid base for further learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The spaced repetition in Duolingo Chinese was beneficial for retention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most people struggle to build consistent habits when learning a language. Duolingo makes it fun and accessible enough that you can log in every day without feeling overwhelmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So if your main goal is to <strong>build a learning habit<\/strong>, Duolingo definitely helps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Duolingo Chinese allows for practice in a fun, engaging way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As I progressed, Duolingo Chinese became a tool for daily learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through Duolingo Chinese, I interacted with various characters and words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the first few months, I used it daily \u2014 and it kept me motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Effectiveness_Great_Start_But_Limited_Depth\"><\/span>The Effectiveness: Great Start, But Limited Depth<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Practicing with Duolingo Chinese, I gained confidence in my skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, here\u2019s where things get a bit more complicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Duolingo Chinese uses <strong>spaced repetition<\/strong> &#8211; the idea of reviewing material at gradually increasing intervals to move information from short-term to long-term memory. Which is something I highly recommend. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a proven concept, but in my experience, Duolingo\u2019s system just isn\u2019t as powerful as specialized tools like <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.ankiweb.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Anki<\/strong>,<\/a> which gives you far more control over review timing and content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More importantly, <strong>Duolingo teaches a lot of isolated words and strange sentences<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll often see examples that no native speaker would ever actually say. I understand the idea, making sentences memorable, but if they\u2019re not realistic or usable in conversation, they don\u2019t help much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Language isn\u2019t just about remembering quirky phrases. It\u2019s about speaking naturally and understanding real people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Weird_Sentences_Problem\"><\/span>The Weird Sentences Problem<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>And so this is where Duolingo Chinese lost me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The app focuses on teaching vocabulary and characters out of context &#8211; and then puts them into odd sentences that you\u2019d never use in the real world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As someone who strongly believes in learning language <strong>in context from the start<\/strong>, this felt like a step backwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you want to sound natural in Mandarin, you need to learn words and phrases as part of <em>real<\/em>, meaningful sentences &#8211; not random ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Text-to-Speech_Issue\"><\/span>The Text-to-Speech Issue<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another limitation is the <strong>text-to-speech<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The audio doesn\u2019t sound fully natural, which is a big problem for Mandarin learners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mandarin pronunciation is tricky. The tones, rhythm, and flow are all crucial to being understood. When I started doing this, my Mandarin speaking literally skyrocketed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of memorizing random vocabulary, collect phrases you actually want to use in everyday conversations. Then review them regularly with spaced repetition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_HSK_Textbooks_Levels_1%E2%80%933\"><\/span>2. <strong>HSK Textbooks (Levels 1\u20133)<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The early HSK textbooks are surprisingly good. They include very common, conversational vocabulary that\u2019s actually useful for beginners. But once you&#8217;re into the realms of intermediate Mandarin I would recommend moving away from textbooks and into comprehensive input and native content as soon as you can. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Graded_Readers\"><\/span>3. <strong>Graded Readers<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two of my favorites are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Mandarin Companion<\/strong> \u2013 engaging stories written with a limited vocabulary.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>??? Chinese Breeze<\/strong> \u2013 slightly cheaper, but equally effective.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both give you natural, contextual language input that\u2019s fun to read and perfect for building comprehension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bonus_Beginner-Friendly_YouTube_Channels\"><\/span>Bonus: Beginner-Friendly YouTube Channels<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, if you prefer to learn in video format, check out some <strong>comprehensible input YouTube channels<\/strong> for beginners. I recommend some of these in my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chunkingchinese.com\/pages\/transform-your-mandarin-learning\">free email course<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These channels use slow, clear Mandarin with simple vocabulary, so you can understand and absorb real speech from day one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They\u2019re like graded readers, but for your ears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Final_Verdict\"><\/span>Final Verdict<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Duolingo is a <strong>great introduction<\/strong> to Mandarin.
