How it actually works

Learn to speak in chunks, not words.

Fluent speech isn't assembled word by word in real time. It's retrieved in reusable chunks, the same way native speakers do it. Chunking Chinese teaches you those chunks and how to combine them to speak natural Mandarin sentences with confidence. Fifteen minutes a day is enough to start speaking more naturally.

Example prompt
"I'd like to ask, where is this place?"
opening我想问一下
topic这个地方
question在哪里
↓ combined and spoken aloud
我想问一下,这个地方在哪里?
wǒ xiǎng wèn yíxià, zhège dìfāng zài nǎlǐ?
The goal

Speak Mandarin the way a native speaker actually does.

Knowing 我 and 想 and 问 doesn't mean you can produce 我想问一下 at conversational speed, with the right grammar and word order in the right part of the sentence. Native speakers aren't reciting grammar rules on the fly, they're retrieving ready-made chunks, patterns that already carry natural sentence structure, and snapping them together. Those chunks are the real building blocks of spoken Mandarin. We call this the chunk recombination method: learn a chunk once, then recombine it into sentences you've never practiced before.

i

Chunks, not isolated words

Each chunk carries its own grammar and word order already built in (an opening, a topic, a question frame), the same natural patterns that show up across dozens of real sentences.

ii

Internalise the pattern, not the sentence

You don't memorize whole sentences. You internalise the underlying pattern once, then simply swap pieces in and out to say something you've never practiced before.

iii

Add your own chunks and sentences

Alongside our extensive chunk-based speaking curriculum, you can add your own sentences and chunks, so practice stays personal to what you actually want to say.

How it works

One setup step, then a daily loop.

Once, before you start

A quick self-assessment

Tell us where you're comfortable across HSK 1–5, and we skip straight past what you already know instead of starting from zero.

Every day after that
1
Learn

New chunks, sized to you

Each day introduces a small batch of new chunks pulled from just above your current level, one notch harder than what you can already do, never a leap.

2
Review

Right before you'd forget

Spaced repetition brings back chunks just as you're about to forget them, so everything you've learned so far stays fresh instead of fading.

3
Speak

An English prompt, spoken in Mandarin

You're given an English sentence that needs two or more chunks combined, and you say the Mandarin out loud.

Why fifteen minutes

Stay consistent. That's the whole trick.

Fluency compounds. A short daily session that keeps chunks moving through review is worth more than an occasional long one, so each practice loop is sized to take about fifteen minutes, start to finish.

See it come together

Watch your chunk network grow.

Every chunk you learn connects to the ones it's combined with in practice. Over time those connections form a network you can see, a visual record of how much of the language you can actually produce, not just recognise.

Worth knowing

What we check when you speak

When you speak your answer, we check which chunks you said and whether the order carries the right meaning.

We now score your pronunciation and your tones as well. Every character of your take gets a sound score and a tone score, the ones that drifted are highlighted, and you can replay any single character in your own voice next to a native recording.

The two checks are kept separate on purpose. Whether an answer is right still depends on the chunks you retrieved and the order you put them in, because that is the skill that lets you speak at all. The pronunciation and tone scores are coaching on top of it, not a gate, and they are automated estimates rather than a teacher's ear.

Coverage

Content spans HSK 1 through HSK 5

Placement puts you at the right level on day one, and new chunks unlock as you go, so beginners and advanced learners are both working at the edge of what they know.

Is this for you?

Built for a specific kind of learner.

This is for you if

  • ✓You already know some Mandarin, a class, an app streak, a trip, but freeze up mid-sentence.
  • ✓You want to learn to speak Mandarin in chunks, the real building blocks of the language, just like native speakers do.
  • ✓You want to speak in real time, not just recognise words on a flashcard.
  • ✓You're happy to practice for around fifteen focused minutes most days.
  • ✓You want practice that keeps adjusting to stay just ahead of what you can already do.
  • ✓You want to hear how your tones and pronunciation actually landed, character by character, on every sentence you speak.
  • ✓You want to catch the tone mistakes you can't hear in yourself, named as the tone you said against the tone the character wanted.

Probably not for you if

  • ✕You're starting from absolute zero and haven't met pinyin or basic characters yet.
  • ✕You want a full accent course, or a human teacher listening to you live.
  • ✕Reading and writing characters is your main goal right now.
  • ✕You're after a one-off crash course rather than an ongoing daily habit.
Questions

Frequently asked

Do I need to already know some Mandarin to start?+

You'll get more out of it if you have at least a little vocabulary and grammar already, since chunking builds on pieces you can recognise. Placement covers HSK 1 through 5, so if you're closer to the beginning it will start you there.

What exactly is a "chunk"?+

A small, reusable fragment of a sentence, like an opening (我想问一下), a topic (这个地方), or a question frame (在哪里). The same chunks show up across many different sentences, so learning one pays off repeatedly.

Do you correct my pronunciation or tones?+

Yes. Every sentence you speak comes back scored character by character, for the sound and for the tone, with the characters that drifted highlighted. Where a tone came out wrong we name the tone you produced and the tone the character wanted there, and you can replay any single character in your own voice next to a native recording. It sits alongside the main grade rather than replacing it: whether an answer is right still depends on which chunks you said and in what order. Every chunk also includes a shadowing step, which is where an accent is actually built. You can turn the pronunciation feedback off in Settings if you would rather just speak.

How does a daily session actually work?+

Each session moves through three parts: Learn introduces a small batch of new chunks just above your current level, Review brings back earlier chunks just before you'd forget them, and Speak gives you an English prompt that needs two or more chunks combined, said out loud in Mandarin. Most sessions take about fifteen minutes.

What's the chunk network?+

As you learn chunks and practice combining them, those connections build into a visual network. It's a way to see how much of the language you can actually produce, not just how many words you've seen once.

How is this different from a flashcard or vocabulary app?+

Flashcard apps mostly test recognition: can you match a word to its meaning. Chunking Chinese tests production: can you retrieve the right chunks, in the right order, and say a complete sentence out loud, under a little time pressure, the way a real conversation demands.

What if my microphone isn't working, or I'd rather not speak out loud?+

If speech input isn't available or permitted, prompts fall back to typing, so you can keep practicing either way.
